Thinking, That’s All…

I think that I’m considering making some changes to my style. For a while now I’ve shot this super contrasty/hard light pop style. But I realize that I’m starting to get a little bored with it. Lately I’ve been brighter, more diffused. Sterile if you will. I’m starting to enjoy it. I’m trying to figure out a way to hybrid this into something that makes a bit more sense. While also getting back to natural light a bit more.

Last month I had two big shoots that were entirely outside. In the middle of the day. It felt a bit like I forgot how to use my camera. I’m not used to having to make so many adjustments during a session. I’ve been shooting such controlled light for so long now that I fumbled with settings and added tons of extra shots by needing to “test”. My response to it was to go buy some ND filters. Shooting handheld flash, and my smaller ones at that. I’m limited to 1/125-1/200 depending on the camera. It doesn’t leave much ability to run flash outside.

And while thats a cheap enough solution, I think I’m going to use this opportunity to evolve a little bit. It’s not that I don’t know how to shoot without my lights. For the first 6-7 years of shooting I never used a flash at all. It can absolutely be done. I have zero excuses.
