Welcome to the Brodeo
We’ve hit that time of the year again. The work just stops, the calls that do come in are favors and price checking. The time when all the hoarding of gold makes sense.
I have maybe three shoots lined up. Zero contracts yet though. I lost a bid for a shoot a couple of weeks ago where a restaurant/bar reached out based off a recommendation. The exchange was cordial until it came down to money. I was informed that another photographer came in $700 cheaper and offered full rights to the photos created. I also learned that he worked with that particular establishment’s PR team. This would explain the price and usage agreement. Something I just can’t compete with. At the same time, I’m not angry I lost out to this photographer. He does absolutely amazing work.
Not moments after another publication reached out for a shoot for an October issue, two events scheduled, a quick product session from my dream agency and all my big invoices all closed out.
I guess my point is that it may not be perfect, but it’s still momentum. I know that I still have the next couple of months all lined up and bills paid. So there’s that. If anyone reading is having a tough time this year, know that we all are in some ways. Anyone doing this full time is in a state of panic half the month. Keep it up, I’m glad I’m still doing it. Even if its the scariest thing I’ve ever done.
